As well as renewing and reviewing work being undertaken in collaboration and co-operation with some of the participants, opportunities for further development work were discussed and planned. As well, Paul met with representatives of several companies who were interested in the capabilities, experience and approach to R+D that Trinity has. Discussions are continuing with these businesses in anticipation of assisting them with either the products and services that Trinity has or developing new ones that address their requirements.
The 5 Most Important Steps You Can Take To Avoid The World(PD)
29 June, 2011 by Paul Davis
The 5 Most Common Myths Surrounding Vascular Disease - The World's No. 1 Killer (courtesy of Millie Bruce). More people die from it than from all types of tumour. Heart attacks can occur to anyone, at any time, anywhere [1]. Myth #1: Only older people should be concerned about the health of their heart. The things that could lead to a heart attack accumulate gradually. Being a couch-potato, boredom over eating and not working out are generally undesirable habits that may begin in childhood. More and more doctors are noticing strokes in patients who are in their 20s and 30s rather than in patients in their 50s and 60s.
Being in shape and being at the appropriate weight won't make you immune to strokes. However, both exercising regularly and maintaining the right body weight does help. You must check your cholesterol and blood pressure levels. The best cholesterol number is lower than 200 hundred. A good blood pressure is 120/80. Myth #2: I'd feel sick if I had high blood pressure or high cholesterol. They consider these, "silent killers" for the reason that they indicate NO warning signs. One third of all older individuals have high blood pressure levels. Of these, one-third don't know they've got it. High cholesterol is a way of measuring the fats maintained by your blood stream. Fats could be deposited anywhere in your body, but sometimes they congregate around organs, including your heart. This inclination might run in families. So, even if you are at a good body weight and do not smoke cigarettes, you should have your cholesterol and blood pressure levels checked frequently. Once isn't sufficient [2]. Myth #3: Both women and men DON'T feel the same signs. Women and men CAN have exactly the same symptoms, however they generally will not. Women tend to develop the subtler indicators and symptoms. Males usually have the kind of heart attacks you can view in the films. But, both genders CAN have any signs. These subtler symptoms, which include jaw achiness, nausea or vomiting, breathlessness and significant low energy, are likely to get explained away. "My jaw hurt since my lunch time sandwich was on whole-grain bread and I needed to chew very hard," or, While clutching their stomach, "I shouldn't have had that extra piece of pizza." "Half of ladies do not have chest pain after all," states Kathy Magliato, a heart expert at California's St. John's Health Center. Put all the little signs together and listen to your physique. Needless to say, women and men can experience the "grab-your-chest-and-fall-down-gasping" kind of heart attack, however you realize, that's not the only way. Myth #4: Assuming that my blood sugar level is in check, being diabetic is just not a threat to my heart. Although continuing to keep your blood glucose level with a normal range (3.5 – 5.7 mmolar) keeps you healthier, having the excess glucose in your system takes its toll on arteries. You should be keeping fit and eating a much healthier diet to help take control of your type 2 diabetes. DFon’t forget to have blood pressure and cholesterol tested, too. Myth #5: My doctor would order tests if I were at risk for cardiovascular disease. Frequently, we overlook to inform the doctor of the little aches we're feeling. The medical professionals, not knowing the various things we deem as unimportant, could pass over heart tests. "Mammograms and Colonoscopies are regularly recommended," says Merdod Ghafouri, a cardiologist at Inova Fairfax Clinic in the state of Virginia, [3] "and are important, but heart scans aren't normally conducted." A heart scan can identify plaque build-up in the arteries before you even know you've got problem. Do you have the oil pressure and transmission liquid examined in your car or truck? Have other precautionary service done? Doesn't your only heart need as much attention as your auto? [1] The Web MD is a nice resource for honest and timely medical and health facts and information. They have a nice article covering cardiovascular common myths .

Dr Paul Davis Reports on the Recent Natural Products New Zealand Summit ...
20 April, 2011 by Geoff Todd
The annual "Natural Products New Zealand Summit" was held in Nelson recently from 13 to 15 April, 2011. It was a very successful event with an increased number of participants compared with last year. A diverse range of speakers from both new Zealand and overseas covered topics ranging from marketing in different parts of the world to the practicalities of undertaking research and development. These conferences provide opportunities for attendees to update themselves on the market, regulatory requirements, funding and taxation issues. This is achieved through both social functions and private discussions. I was privileged to attend the summit and to lead a workshop on "research for the development of natural products". I found considerable interest in the services, experience and advice that Trinity Bioactives has available. We are able through sound and reproducible scientific tests which we have developed ourselves to measure and demonstrate the efficacy of of natural products to aid in the development of natural products as well as offer sound support to marketing claims when promoting products to market.
If no suitable test currently exists we are happy to work with our clients to develop or adapt the necessary "test" to specific requirements of a new product being developed.

“Does taking a particular Supplement have any measurable effect?”
15 February, 2011 by Paul Davis
As users of dietary supplements we believe that the supplements we take are doing us good ... After all, we wouldn't take them otherwise. We've checked out the quality of the ingredients and found them to be superb: we've read the testimonials: we even have some anecdotal evidence from friends who tried the supplement before we did: so we're pretty sure we're not wasting money. We're investing in our health, right? Sound familiar? But, what if you had actual scientific proof that your supplement was doing you good? What if you had the answer to the question: "Does taking a particular supplement have any measurable effect?" Here, at 'Trinity Bioactives', we have been developing a range of simple, rapid, low cost, easy to use at home tests that will help answer that very question. It is actually a scientific question - and it deserves a scientific answer. The question again is, "Does taking a particular supplement have any measurable effect?" So how does it work? Our tests use small quantities of urine and take just a few minutes. Our initial product pipeline includes: 1. Antioxidant test that measures a person's total antioxidant status. This test has been trialled in people with good results. It is close to being market available. 2. A Cortisol test which is an indicator of stress and of potential metabolic conditions that may lead to obesity. A prototype for human tests will be available soon. Our development programme brings together the expertise , resources and experience of 'Trinity Bioactives Ltd', Science Haven Ltd, the scientific directors of these companies: Dr Paul Davis - Trinity Bioactives and Dr Len Blackwell – Science Haven; each of whom have more than 40 year experience in bioactivity testing. More details on these Two Tests: 1/ The Antioxidant Test: This test is used to measure variations in total antioxidant capacity resulting from changes in diet or use of supplements. An excess of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is damaging to many organs of the body. The distribution of ROS is widespread. An active antioxidant system maintains a correct level of ROS. This can be achieved through a range of vitamins and anti-oxidants. Monitoring of the total anti-oxidant capacity is a preventive health measure and a means of confirming the merits and levels of supplement consumption. The current test: • Measures total antioxidant capacity. • Produces an orange colour which is proportional to antioxidant capacity. • Takes about 4 minutes Similar methodologies could be developed to test the antioxidant level in natural products. For example: • Fruit and vegetable extracts • Juices, honey, syrups • Beverages. 2/ The Cortisol Test: Cortisol levels are a measure of health. Consistently high levels of cortisol are an indicator of stress. High levels can be a precursor to many health conditions such as weight gain, depression and immune system suppression. We now have a prototype test which measures the level of cortisol using a urine test. We welcome your enquiries to Dr Paul Davis at: p.davis@trinitybioactives.com Cheers, Geoff Todd. PS. Anaemia In Vivo Test
31 December, 2010 by Paul Davis
Trinity Bioactives has an "in vivo" model for anaemia or rather testing the effectiveness of products which may relieve the symptoms of anaemia. If you are wanting to develop a natural product and need to test its effectiveness in relieving anaemia or the symptoms of anaemia in this test may be perfect for you. We have conducted this model several times with good results. Anaemia is produced in rats by feeding them a diet that has a lower than normal iron content. Once anaemia is established, test products that may relieve the condition are administered. The anaemic state is monitored by measuring blood haemoglobin concentrations at regular intervals. The general health of the rats is constantly assessed. Anaemia is caused by a deficiency of dietary iron. This results in lowered blood haemoglobin levels as well as lowered levels of other important iron-containing proteins such as transferrin and cytochromes which are crucial for energy production. Such deficiencies are serious health risks especially in pregnancy. Any new natural product which may be effective against the condition of anaemia and the associated health risks will have a high up-take in the marketplace: especially if it can be proven to be safe, effective, and quickly absorbed. If this new model we have developed their Trinity Bioactives may be of assistance to you in discovering or proving the efficacy of your product then please contact me in complete confidence today at the telephone number or e-mail address below. Cheers, Geoff Todd. PS. Broad Range of Bio Assays proves popular at “SupplySide West 2010”…
29 October, 2010 by Geoff Todd
Paul Davis had no time for sight-seeing at the recent SupplySide West 2010 Trade-show in Las Vegas.
He was booked solid with “end-on-end” appointments with potential clients who were keen to find out what we do at Trinity Bioactives. That was 5 full-on days of 10-12 hours of meetings! That means a ton of future business coming our way and means the trip to Las Vegas was a great investment for us. Our excited but exhausted - Director of Research - Paul was amazed to find so much interest in our broad range of Bio Assays ( tests ): in particular the anti-oxidant and cortisol tests we have developed. In truth, there are probably not many companies like Trinity Bioactives in the world and what makes us unique is our focus on nutraceuticals and functional foods: particularly ones made from natural products. Being in New Zealand means that we are based in a country with a large agricultural sector which is a world leader in growing natural products. That level of expertise definitely feeds the fountain of knowledge and experience from which we draw at Trinity Bioactives. As I told you last time Trinity Bioactives has more than 150 operational in vitro and in vivo tests and models. These are used to investigate bioactivities and bioavailability associated with a wide range of natural products, compounds, preparations, extracts and developed products.” Find out more about us here: http://www.trinitybioactives.com/AboutTrinity/tabid/1547/Default.aspx Cheers, Geoff Todd.
